Protein energy malnutrition is also called PEM, it means lack of protein and energy molecules in human body.
Here we are going to discuss about kwashiorkar and marasmus.
So let’s discuss about kwashiorkar and marasmus.
The word kwashiorkar means – rejected child.
(a) What is kwashiorkar ?
Kwashiorkar is a disorder found in children one to five year of age, where child is weaned off mother’s milk very early.
(b) Why children are affected by kwashiorkar
Children get low protein and low carbohydrate diet are affected by kwashiorkar.
As they are getting less protein and carbohydrate in their diet due to it their body lacks protein and carbohydrates, which lead to kwashiorkar.

- Stunted growth
- Dry and scaly skin
- Odema ( retention of water in tissues )
- Match stick legs
- Protruted belly
(d) How to cure kwashiorkar ?
We can cure the kwashiorkar by feeding the child with protein rich diet including milk, soyabean, egg etc.
The word marasmus means working away.
(a) what is marasmus ?
Child remaining under-nourished suffer from marasmus. Usually marasmus is common in children below the age of one year.
(b) Why children are affected by marasmus
Marasmus is caused by deficiency of protein Carbohydrate and fat.
(c) Symptoms of marasmus
- Low body weight
- Wasting of muscles
- Prominent ribs
- Sunken ribs
- Lean body with thin limbs
- Mental retardation
(d) How to cure marasmus ?
We can cure marasmus by giving protein, carbohydrates and fats rich diet. This will help child to grow properly.
Difference between kwashiorkar and marasmus.
1. Kwashiorkar is a disorder which found in 1 – 5 years old children while marasmus disease is found in less then 1 year old children.
2. Children get affected by kwashiorkar due to lack of protein and carbohydrates while lack of protein, carbohydrates and fats lead to marasmus disease.
