Working of hydraulic brakes with labelled diagram

Today we are going to discuss about hydraulic brakes, working of hydraulic brakes and advantages of hydraulic brakes with labelled diagram.

Hydraulic brakes

Hydraulic brake is a system or arrangement of a braking mechanism.
In which we use fluids to transfer pressure from controlling system to braking system.
The hydraulic brakes which are used in automobiles are based on Pascal’s law of transmission of pressure in a liquid.

What is Pascal’s law

Pascal’s law tells us how pressure can be transmitted in a fluid.
• The pressure which is exerted at any point on an enclosed liquid is transmitted equally in all directions.
• The pressure in a fluid at rest is same at all points if we ignore gravity.
• The change in pressure applied to an enclosed incompressible fluid is transmitted undiminished to every point of fluid and the walls of the containing vessel.

Construction of hydraulic brakes

Working of hydraulic brakes with labelled diagram

As shown in figure, a hydraulic brake consists of a tube T containing brake oil. One end if this tube is connected to a master cylinder fitted with piston P. The piston P is attached to a break pedal through a lever system.
The other end of the tube is connected to the wheel cylinder having 2 pistons P1 and P2. The pistons P1 and P2 are connected to the brake shoes S1 and S2 respectively.
The area of cross – section of the wheel cylinder is larger than that of master cylinder.

Working of hydraulic brakes

When the pedal is pressed, its lever system pushes the piston P into master cylinder. The pressure is transmitted through the oil of the pistons P1 and P2 in the wheel cylinders in accordance with Pascal’s law.
The pistons P1 and P2 are pushed outwards. The brake shoes get pressed against the inner rim of the wheel, retarding the motion of the wheel.
As the cross-sectional area of wheel cylinder is larger than that of master cylinder, a small force applied to the pedal produces a large retarding force.
When the paddle is released, a spring pulls the brake shoes away from the rim. The pistons in both cylinders move towards their normal positions and the oil is forced back into the master cylinder.

Advantages of hydraulic brakes

Here are some advantages of hydraulic brakes.
• The master cylinder transmits equal retarding force on each wheel. So a hydraulic brake operates uniformly and hence prevents skidding.
• A small force applied to the pedal exerts a much larger force on the wheel drums. It enables the driver to keep the vehicle under control.
